Lake Superior Region Candidate For Nuclear Waste
Federal agencies are looking for a replacement to Nevada's Yucca Mountain nuclear waste site, and some sights are set on the Lake Superior region of Wisconsin and Minnesota.
According to an Associated Press writer, the U.S. Department of Energy is looking for granite-rich locales in the U.S. to house nuclear waste – upwards of 70,000 metric tons.
A study by the New Mexico Sandia National Laboratory says that sites other than Yucca Mountain are being sought for nuclear waste disposal, particularly with regard to granite, though no place has yet been determined to be the main replacement for Yucca.
Other places mentioned in the report include New York, New England, and parts of the western U.S.
