Arrests Made In Connection With 13 Burglaries

Bayfield Electric Cooperative targeted: report

[UPDATED] Three people were arrested this week in connection with 13 burglaries in Ashland and Bayfield counties, according to the Bayfield County Sheriff's Department.

Multiple search warrants were executed in the City of Ashland, leading to the recovery of stolen property from 13 burglaries, a news release states. One burglary occurred in Iron River, 10 in Bayfield County, and two in Ashland County, the release states.

The arrests are related to copper thefts from Bayfield Electric Cooperative in Iron River and Mellen, according to a Northland's NewsCenter report. On Friday morning, employees at the cooperative discovered that copper wires had been stolen from the company's trucks the night before, the report states.

The Ashland County Sheriff's Department arrested a 28-year-old man on Monday for allegedly possessing $2,500 in stolen copper wire from Bayfield Electric Cooperative, according to a probable cause statement filed Tuesday in Ashland County Circuit Court.

Jeremy Foss, of Ashland, faces charges for receiving stolen property, according to the statement. Law enforcement executed a search warrant on at Foss' storage locker, where the copper wire was allegedly found. Foss "stated he knew the wire was stolen and hid it in his storage shed for a friend," the statement reads.

At a bail hearing on Wednesday afternoon, Foss' bail was set at $700 cash.

The Bayfield County Sheriff's Department did not release the names of the people taken into custody.

“Because of the ongoing nature of this investigation, and the possibility of more arrests, names will not be released at this time,” the release states.
